"Separation of church and state" has to be one of the most misunderstood concepts in America. Contrary to popular belief, it is not in the U.S. Constitution. In fact, it is not in America’s legal code at all. Rather, it is a completely foreign notion that has entered the pop culture and, somehow, taken on a life of its own.
The term itself was an adaptation from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson to a group of Baptists in Connecticut. Jefferson was simply reassuring this group that he agreed with their contention that the federal government should not establish a state church nor impose a religious mandate on American citizens. Nowhere was there the notion that Christians, or anyone else for that matter, should be prohibited from expressing their personal faith in the public square.
Yet that is what this argument has come to be about. There are those who truly believe that there is a ?neutral” point of view as it relates to values. Additionally, these same people typically contrast these ?neutral” values with ?religious” (particularly Christian) values.
In this book, Freddy Davis engages the notion of values as they are expressed in public life. His treatment of this topic begins by looking at where values really come from. He then answers key questions regarding the true nature of religious values and how the notion of separation of church and state should be addressed.
