The apostle Paul was very active as he went throughout the various parts of the Roman Empire starting churches. Obviously, because of the itinerant nature of his ministry, when he started a church he couldn't stay long. So, he aggressively trained local Christians and turned the church leadership over to them.

But he didn't just start the churches and leave them to their own devices. He actively stayed in touch with them in order to be of as much help and encouragement as he could. Often these fledgling churches had problems – both moral and theological. To help solve these, he would write letters that gave them guidance. The four churches represented in these letters are prime examples of the way Paul interacted with those churches.
